Weiss event with OEM partner Airplain loudspeakers
Here’s a short report from Daniel Weiss himself on a recent trip to Hong Kong with Weiss Engineering’s OEM partner, Airplain speakers.
Recently I visited our partner in Hong Kong, Mr. Kent Poon, together with Thomas and Irene Flammer who design, manufacture, and sell the Airplain speakers here in Switzerland.
Airplain is an OEM customer of ours. They use our DSP, A/D, and D/A for their top-model speakers. During our visit, we presented a pair of the speakers to media people and interested potential customers.
We were allowed to use a very nice location for this event: the Champ Kitchen restaurant in Hong Kong. The owner is a Weiss customer, owning many of our high-end hifi and pro audio units.
We discussed the philosophy of our products and some technical details of our implementations. The speakers are three- or four-way designs with some of the best drivers available for low and mid-range (made by PURIFI) combined with an AMT magnetostatic speaker for the treble frequencies. The AMT has the advantage that it can be used down to fairly low frequencies, avoiding any crossover point within the higher frequency band, which is sonically preferable.
Our electronics use two SHARC signal processors for the crossovers and other signal processing tasks similar to those in our DAC501 / DAC502 / HELIOS units. The A/D Converter and D/A Converters are of very high quality for the utmost transparency.
We are now working on more such OEM projects with speaker companies that want to use digital crossovers and active designs. We see that approach becoming a trend in high-end HiFi. There are numerous advantages over standard passive designs.
